Depends on what your needs are, if you have a high rpm high
comp engine a dist with a cd box would be good. if you have
a pump gas friendly hydraulic cam mid range rpm engine a new
HEI dist can do that job.
Little Mouse,
I think you nailed that one. I have a high rpm comp motor with a basic HEI dist. and I can not get it in time properly. I tried different springs and weights but still can't seem to get it. What dist with cd box do you recommend?
Sorry I didn't intend to hijack this thread.

ive been praising the e-curve that ive had for over a yr now. but when my 383 blew up it was the culprit. the gears let loose. but i am not sure yet if something else has caused this. will report more later when the honey do list is much shorter.
oh, for some reason this particular dist is subject to moisture. in just a yr. ive had three caps and all the screws look 80 yrs old with rust.
This why the MSD E-curve is such a crappy product.
There is a previous post on this that I responded to.
I bought one last year after donating my perfectly good Mallory Unilite system to a 65 Nova drag racing effort.
I use a Comp Cams Poly dist gear and the MSD shaft size is different than Mallory so that was an additional @$100 for a new gear and New set of Taylor Pro Wires was another $135
The Problems I see with the MSD - E is very small adjustment pots with 10 position clicker dials. You can't hardly see them bending over a fender. The 10 X 10 gives 100 possible combinations. Well 90 of them are so far out of bounds that you would never use them. Then the increments of possible choices is to big also.
I don't like MSD 10 - 15 - 20 - 25 mech advance degree choices. Like the typical guy wants 38 degrees. You have to set the initial to coinside with MSD 10 - 15 - 20 - 25 mech advance. They should be finer Like I want 32 degrees max my only real choice is 17 initial and 15 = 32 You see I can't even use the 10, 20 or 25.
Only a electronic engineer who didn't run a car would come up with that. They need to be 2-3 degrees. It the same thing on Vac advance
Well after the past two post I am definetly not buying it. Does the Crane Cams electronic dist. better, such as better choices for timing curves and not subject to moisture. Would like to hear from someone using this dist.

Still not sure which to buy? Would like more actual experiances. I see some fairly inexpensive HEI tach. drive units new on ebay. Any reason to think they are not up to snuff?
Personally, my feeling is what's wrong with a good points distributor? The points system in my '65 easily goes to 7500rpm (that buries my tach and since my redline is 6500 I never pushed it further than 7500 to know how much more it could go) with no breakup or points float.
If you want a bit more spark activity than add the MSD ignition box to it to replace the coil.
other than that go for a tach drive HEI unit.
I received the Crane Cam Elactronic Dist., HI-6 box and the LX92 Coil this past weekend and installed everything yesterday. I can not say enough about what a huge difference it made. The throtle is really crisp and it idles very smooth at 700 rpm. I notticed and little more pick-up on lower rpms; that was the trouble spot I was having with my old Mallory dist.
Next is to cahange the rear gears from 3:08 to 3:73.
It never ends, you fix/improve one thing and you never what to stop!
Thanks to Little Mouse for suggestions and input.
11Jake: WHich distributor did you replace? Mallory?? HEI? Unilite? Just currious..
I replace a Mallory dist. with the Crane 1000-1501 electronic dist.
Tha Mallory was a basic replacement for the GM HEI. I paid $600 for the Crane dist., HI-6 Box & the Coil. It was a little pricy but most of the time you get what you pay for, and I definetly think this was the case. The quality of the parts are top notch and the performance is greatly improved. Also there are a lot of choices for you timing with the dials on the dist. casing. Timing the car took about 20 minutes and it was timed perfect.
