You don't have to but your back will hurt more if you don't and your over 40. I just did this on my '73. Also had to remove the clutch safety switch to get to the upper left nut. Man, what a pain in the back, sides, neck, ****...

I can vouch for that pain in the **** feeling. I left the seat in and I'm 6'5".
One thing I did do tho was to cut off part of that upper left bolt before putting the booster back in.
It made sense not to have the same difficulty with it again.
