Default external balance 383 help

ok yesterday i went to local speed shop(Speed Unlimited) and bought a 383 shortblock. it is a 1 piece rear main roller block. steel crank and rods, forged pistons. the motor is external balance. i dont know alot about this stuff but the balancer and flywheel it came with have alot of weights welded to them. on the balancer there r 4 added weights and on flywheel there is a 4 in plate welded on it. is that normal? this is supposed to be a solid shortblock to compliment my afr 195 heads and roller cam. they said i could spin it to 6500 and spray my small NOS kit 100 shot all day. what do u think?

Those welded on weights ARE the external balance. Wih the steel crank, forged pistons and good rods, it'll take just about anyhing you want to throw at it. With enough cam and everything else, I wouldn't think that 6500 would be a "limit" but something more in the range on 7500-8000. Just depends on how big the cajones are.

Double check,..make sure it was all balanced together with the flywheel and harmonic. If it wasn't you could be in trouble. If so,..you're in business.

Most prefer internally balanced stuff because the harmonic and fly are neutrally balanced.

how do i double check to see if it was all balanced together? the flywheel and balancer both had the same job # on there boxes which had been opened before, so i assume it was done right. u can never be sure enough though.

ask your supplier. If he dosen't know ask him who did the balance and ask them. Since the job number is the same on all the boxes, it would appear that it's all balanced together, but you never know for sure unless you can ask.
