I just pulled the A/C box out of my '77 and it was NOT easy. I would suggest leaving it in there unless you plan on taking the motor out. It was a pain in the butt with the motor in the car.
is it welded/bolted to the firewall? thanks DB for the info
There are two long screws from the inside that hold to the bottom of the box, and there are 4? bolts holding it in from the outside. The A/C dryer being attached is the biggest problem as you can't rotate the box to slide it out without lodging against the wheel well of engine.
I tried separating the box in half by taking out all those screws but the bottom is riveted to the other half. I had to use a long flat screw driver to break the rivets.
and thats for the AC box right? how bout the A/C dryer in the first pic?
That's attached tot eh box via some big coolant tubes. You will probably not be able to separate them with the box in the car and that's why I pulled the box with the dryer when I took mine out.
If you get the dryer off, maybe cutting the tubes, you will have a lot more room.
You cqan remove the VIR/dryer but it is a real pain. I have had to replace mine a couple of times. When i first got the car back in 93 it did not work so I pulled everything and replaced it all. The VIR's are a bad design and if your lucky you can get a few years out of one. Plus they only work with the old R12 which is expensive. If I had it to do over again I would upgrade to a newer system that is designed for R134. That may happen anyway if it craps out again.
well i dont plan on using an ac system in this car...the condenser in front of the radiator is gone and i really dont want to have the extra weight...im already draging on low hp (l48) so what ever weight i can get rid of is good for me =) Oh this might be random...but what do u guys do for loose wireing? i got a few wires that are diconnected....and jsut want to cap them off.

GM certainly did not make them easy to access.
On the point of removing your evaporator from the box, I don't believe the evaporator is very heavy. For the trouble of removing it, I would just leave it in. Also, if you, or any future owner, ever wants to put A/C back on, parts can get pretty expensive. So, make sure you keep all of the parts. If you can get to the VIR, it won't hurt to remove it if you want a cleaner looking engine compartment.
Now, the compressor is another story. That thing is not light.
