From the size of the center hole it looks like it spun till the fan came over the nut. Loose nut on shaft? They should be put on with an impact wrench.
No, the belt was a little on the loose side. I put a different set of blades on it today and I had to get the nut off with a impact wrench. Then I put it back on with one. It is tight. Now I just need to find the right belt size since it is not the stock mount.
Be happy that it didn't go thru the hood. I know a guy that almost lost his arm because of an alternator fan like that. He reached over and winged the throttle and the fan came apart.
That is bad news. It made a couple spider cracks on the paint. But I think that is from the belt. When is blew off it cut the belt and shot it off the car.
Justin make sure the adjustment bracket is not on the front side of alternator tab where the bolt goes through. If its on the front or forward side it can hit the alt. fan and break it.In your picture the tips of the blades show signs of hitting something.
If the center of the fan was under the nut and still tight if must have had cracks all the way around the center then got hooked on the belt and broken off.
are they just trying to make (some) auto parts as lousy as possible? should chrome plating or silver plating or gold plating weaken a piece of steel to the point of catastrophic failure? man!!! i don't think so. it's not exactly turbine blade science here . . . seen any plastic fan failures lately? amazing!!! what's next? be looking for chrome alternator fan scatter shields i guess . . .
