ok so i am looking at trading my engine for an LS1 and i was wanting to know if anyone on here knows where to look on the engine for the stamp numbers so that i can determine what car the engine came out of. TIA

Mike,
The engines have a bunch of barcodes on them from assembly, but I'm not sure if they are stamped with vins. Why? There all very similar except for the LS1 and LS6. The LS6 has some vent holes in the crankcase and is a stronger alum. The blocks have a casting number on the back driver side of the block. The only difference in the heads are valvecover bolt holes and some minor flow differences. Most are 241 and 243. LS6 intakes are easy to identify, just look at the top of the manifold behind the throttle body. If there is a EGR tube it is a LS1 intake.
A couple of other things. F-body oil pans look like ours, Corvette oil pans have bat wings.
I wouldn't sweat it. If it's an alum. block it had to come out performance car. Mine was in a 01 TA and I lucked out, because GM ran out of LS1's and started installing LS6 blocks in F-bodies.

thanks for info Buddy. i was just curious if the engines had vin numbers stamped on the blocks like our engines had from the factory that way i could tell what car it came out of if i decided to run a carfax to make sure that it didnt come out of a flood victom car or something like that. anyways im pretty sure that everything is ok with the engine and i am just so friggin excited to be getting a LS1 for my car. BTW i am also getting the automatic tranny that came with the engine and i was wanting to know if i will have to modify my tranny crossmember so that it will bolt in? again TIA
It's Federal law engines have to be VIN stamped...if the engine was originally installed in a vehicle. If it's a crate engine it will still have numbers but no VIN stamped in it. The numbers will designate it as a crate or service replacement (warranty) engine.
There should also be numbers that designate what GM vehicle it was designed for, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was originally installed in such a vehicle. As Budman said, many engines coded for Corvettes were factory installed in F-body cars.
To be completely sure, only a VIN stamped block can tell you for sure what vehicle any particular engine was originally installed in.

Yep, I think the Bowtie 700R4 crossmember will work. Jegs sells a weld up kit for under $100. Most muffler shops could fab it up for you.
here are pictures of the engine. i was told it has a ZO6 intake but im not familiar with these engines at all. can anyone tell me if this is true just by looking at the pictures or are they all very similar?
That looks like an 01 or 02 motor. With those brackets, that is a score. If you have a computer, fuel, and battery; you should be able to start it up. You only need four wires hooked up. 12V, Ground, fuel relay, and ignition.
