Default 406 balancer question

I am replacing a stock L48 with a 406. At this stage I have not decided on internal or external balance. When I examine the balancer on my stock L48 it looks like it fits just inside the pulley that drives the belts for the water pump, a/c, alternator etc... I am assuming that the stock balancer is 6 3/4"

If I use a 8" balancer will this cause the pulley to move out enough to change the alignment with the other accessories?

Your guess would be as good as anyone else's.... The stock damper is designed to minimize vibrations for a STOCK engine. Every mechanical "motive" device has resonant vibrations which occur at certain frequencies due to the design of the engine itself. Your modification of the engine will likely change those frequencies; thus, it would be unknown as to how well the stock damper will smooth out those vibrations. It certainly is a reasonable step to take, but damper design is a science [not an art], and testing/engineering develops such devices for engine makers. Perhaps someone else has built an engine very similar to yours and can comment on how effective the stock damper works in their case.

I'm not sure that I understand your question. The crank pulley is mounted to the front surface of the damper, not the outside, so the diameter of the damper isn't relevant.

Assuming that your 406 is a bored SB 400, then these are normally externally balanced.

This answers my question. If the pulley is mounted to the front of the balancer then if I change the diameter of the balancer the location of the pulley will be the same.

Thanks

Depending on the water pump you're using, watch the clearance here. I used a gm aluminum waterpump and ended up cutting a piece off. It's easy to see when you get everything bolted up.
