I'm new to this forum, but so far have found it very helpful and informative.
I have a '73 with 454 4speed. I believe the shifter needs a slight adjustment. If I shift to second and then let off the gas it will eventually pop out of second on it own. All of the other gears are functioning fine.
Anyone have any experience with this? Can you direct me to the proper procedure / tools to adjust the linkage?
It could be linkage...but it could also be wear inside the transmission. Check for "slop" in the linkage arms; if they are loose and tend to flop around when you move them around by hand, you might want to install a new linkage bushing kit. Also check for full engagement of gears. There are stop adjustments on the linkage and one of those could be set incorrectly.
I had this happen too. Turned out to be that the reverse lockout cable, running from the firewall just under the steering column and down to the reverse lever on the shifter, was interfering with the 1-2 shifter arm.
Simply moved the cable out the way of the shifter arm and "viola" problem fixed.
That can happen if the clutch teeth on 2nd gear or the 1-2 slider assembly is worn. The repair involves replacing the slider and/or second gear. Usualy you can get away with just a slider. You will probably replace the brass blocker rings too while you are in there. All part of a transmision rebuild.
