Is it OK to remove the Diff cover to take a look at the internals? If I replace gasket(?) when I re-install will it be OK? I'm just wondering if it will hurt/damage anything.
I really don't think it will, but being misinformed and jumping into something hasn't been too rewarding. I just want to make sure, just in case.
It won't hurt anything. Just scrape the gasket completely off the housing and cover with a razor blade. GM still sells the gaskets, fluid and additive. Where you need to be careful is when you are installing the spring to the cover. There are 4 bolts. Tighten each one down a little at a time in a cross pattern, kind of like lug nuts. If you run the all the way up one at a time, you will more than likely crack the cover.
Thanks, that was what I was thinking. Yeah, I don't tighten only one bolt at a time. I learned the hard way.
I'm curious as to what it looks like in their. I would like to see if anything is messed up considering the clunking noise I normally get when making 90 degree turns slow (like getting into traffic or something).
Before I would go into the labor intensive cover removal, I would siphon the old lubricant out, add a bottle of positraction additive, and refill with the proper lubricant. After doing this, take the car out to a large parking lot and do several "lazy" slow speed figure eights. This will usually take care of the complaint that you have

That is a great idea, the only problem is my brakes aren't quite usable yet, lol. Plus I'm to curious for my own good. I really would like to take a look in there.
