Default Hood release…

4 or 5 years ago, the cable snapped on my hood. While there are a few decent methods of opening it, varying from a screwdriver through the firewall to a 12 pack and a sledge hammer, they are all a pain in the azz that I didn’t really want to do if I was presented with the task ever again.

Well, I was presented said task today. After 4 or 5 years of proven testing (OK, one test in 4 or 5 years), I am proud to say that my idea back then is a success. I opened my hood in about 3 nano seconds, so I’d thought I pass this on.

When my last cable busted, I cut it and ran an “emergency disconnect” down both sides using the remaining pieces. They are nearly invisible and worked well. I think the pic explains it…

Hope this helps someone use the next 12 pack for something other than sledge hammering their hood open.

Default Great idea

Thanks for the tip. I'm planning on replacing mine-I'll be sure to keep the old cable as a back up. I'm sure this will save me a lot of pain at sometime in the future!

Great idea Lonny, Where does the loose end hang under the car, do you have it attached to anything under the car to keep it conveniently accessible?

it isn't attached anywhere. both sides hang about frame level right against the firewall for several years now. i just felt under , grabbbed about 2" and pulled.

Sure, but where's the fun in that? You don't even hardly get to cuss.

I just ran into this situation with the hood release cable coming off on my 1970 model last weekend. I couldn't find the hole in the firewall to stick a long screwdriver in that everyone mentions. Having a L88 hood scoop, I stuck my hand inside (barely), but this method will ONLY release the passenger-side latch. Ultimately, all I did was remove the driver-side fender louver/vent, reached up, and pulled the latch mechanism. Easy! And all within 60 seconds.
