I was wondering if a msd box would help with a little extra power? I have a msd cap, rotor, coil, and wires allready. The msd module is 80$ do you still use the module with the 6al box?
If all components are new and everything is adjusted/tuned properly (LOTS of good info on doing it are around - check the sticky at the top of this forum), a stock setup will perform superbly. In that case adding an MSD 6AL will likely gain you very little more than longer point life (admittedly arguable!). That said, in a stock system, as the points start to erode from normal arcing, performance/economy start to degrade slightly, but steadily.
You can fire the MSD 6AL from a module or stock points - and again, it's doubtful that there would be ANY advantage at all using a "module" to fire the MSD box vs. points. One negative with the "module", you add another point of electrical failure (I have had them die on me before!) so using points would eliminate that.
So, if you have the MSD 6AL, use it with a fresh set of stock points and save the $80 for something you'll get more bang for the $ from. Your car will run great!
As far as economy, theoretically, you might gain a bit using the 6AL - primarily due to the precise ignition timing and high energy spark - but that too may be more marketing hype than fact.
I have a hei dist. I was looking on there website and looks like on a 4 pin gm modual you remove the modual and replace it with a wiring harness. Then again i could be wrong
Thanks jackson,
Maby you can help me with one more thing, i been looking at race cars again (i know my first mistake) , but i"ve seen these carb spacers about 1/2 inch thick, they look to be made of plywood and covered in a clear resin. I asked the gentleman where he got it and he said, http://www.cvproducts.com/cv/ but that"s a big website and i am having no luck finding them . Are you familer whith what i"m talking about? david
I have a '69 427/435 with an L88 cam which makes for a very cranky engine and installed a MSD 6A a couple of years ago. While the difference in power may be measurable on a dyno, by my "seat of the pants" dyno I really feel no appreciable difference. What I have noticed is the car starts better and isn't as prone to stalling until the engine warms up. That...and the gas mileage improved somewhat...not a great deal but some.
I mounted the 6A behind the passenger side of the dash where it's not visible and away from engine heat.
I do believe it's probably worthwhile for you to install a capacitive discharge ignition, just don't believe in miracles. You still need a properly tuned engine or it's all for nothing.
Thanks jackson,

Yes, I know CV & I know what sorta spacer you're speaking of. CV is a "Real" race car parts supplier. I'm looking in an old 2002 CV hardcopy catalog ... showing birchwood spacers made by "AED" ... gaskets pre-laminated to 1/2" spacers ... aed = advanced engine design of Richmond VA http://www.aedperformance.com/Accessories.htm ... you can see em there.
We use CV's own alum spacer on the late models etc ... but they have a precise bore & height as spelled out in track rules ... like a restrictor plate.
-edit- again, I don't think 6 box is worth it for yours ... but if you just gotta do it ... I have F/S a very nice matched pair of msd "Black" HVC 6600 box & HVC 8250 coil ... they are from a cup car & good. When you bypass HEI module for CD box ... use the HEI pickup for trigger ... HEI pickup wires are: white HEI pu goes to CD box POS trigger ... green HEI pu goes to CD box NEG trigger. Most MSDbox I fool w/ are Violet POS trigger, Green NEG trigger. I'm pretty sure I also have a remote coil adapter fro HEI cap. You know how to email me David.
