'74 L-48 4-spd. Bone stock except for the upgraded exhaust system. Out of the blue it started running like crapp. When you give it 1/2 throttle or more it missses. In other words it cuts out for a fraction of a second every couple of seconds. Like one of the cylinders is not firing. Keep in mind this came out of the blue. I wasn't in the middle of doing engine work when this happened. So here's what I did to attempt to fix:
First I set the timing at 36 degrees according to Lars paper. Didn't help.
Second, I put in new plugs gapped properly. Didn't help.
Third, I replaced the distr cap and rotor. Didn't help.
Fourth, I changed the plug wires. Didn't help.
Fifth, I took out the fuel filter completely thinking it was clogged. Didn't help.
It acts like it's starving for fuel. Am thinking about putting a guage on the fuel line to see how it's flowing.
I think you're right. I bought a Pertonix I kit off fleabay a couple of months ago. Haven't put it in yet cause it seems a little over my head. Thought it would be easy but by the looks of the directions, am not feeling too good about it. They seem pretty complex. Might give it a stab. I figure if I can convert the car from an auto tranny to a 4 sp then the Pertronix couldn't be that tough. Or maybe it's time to call my gearhead friend.
I would check the fuel pump as stated, just go to autozone and get one of those Spectre fuel pressure gauges and install it in the line between the pump and the carb and it will show you your fuel psi. If it reads around 6psi you are good to go.

I had a similar issue with my 75. Engine had been running great and than all of a sudden it would just fall flat as to power and acceleration. I almost removed the engine to see if something internal had happened. What I came to find out is the vacumn advance unit on the side of the distributor had developed a crack in the rubber diaphram which led to no advance.
Hope this helps
