The A/C compressor on my '71 is shot. It smokes when I attach the belt to it.
Here's my question: If I buy a new compressor does it need to be lubricated or serviced in any way ?
I don't use the A/C, it's mainly to make the engine compartment look complete with the belt attached, and I don't want to $pring for a coolant conversion and re-charge at this point.
The new compressor will come with oil. But it needs to be evaced and charged, otherwise the humidity and air in the system will corrode the compressor and other parts.
www.ackits.com had the best prices on NEW compressors. If you just want a reman, you can get them there also for under $200. If you are not going to run the AC, I wouldn't spend the money on the compressor. You could probably just buy a new clutch for yours, then you can put the belt back on it and it will free wheel smoothly, eventhough the compressor may or may not be good. That would be the cheapest option for appearance sakes.
Why not just replace the clutch or just leave the belt off? Sounds like the bearing is bad. If you don't use it there is no reason to replace the compressor. Leave the system intact for the next owner to fool with.

If it smokes when you install the belt and do not engage the clutch than it will be the pulley brg. There is a good chance the comp is just fine.
You can pull the clutch plate off and pull the retaining snap ring on the pulley brg than remove the pulley and brg. I'm Batman just purchased a clutch plate puller and installer for a GM comp for 25$ at NAPA.
