Rebuild it or replace it. Either one is pretty easy. Rebuilding is a lot cheaper than replacing

check the hoses first, they are a lot easier to change if they are the problem. besides you'll probably repolace them anyway if you rebuild the valve

Yes you can drive it, just keep an eye on the juice and how much its leaking. It will make a mess and if its a leaking hose it can get a lot worse

if one of these hoses suddenly ruptures or developes a large leak, would it cause the steering to lock in one direction?

Heck, it could be any of that stuff below. The hoses definately develop leaks with age as does the assist cylinder rod seal and the control valve. Gunk it all off and see where it is coming from. If the control valve body to piston clearance is excessive, its not rebuildable.

Corvette America sells a rebuild kit for $25.

They also sell a new (not rebuilt) control valve for $250, and a rebuilt for $150. A brand new GM control valve will cost over $400 from a Chevy dealer.

Sigh...ask me how I know...

For your P/S control valve, I would get in touch with VB&P and have them build you one with the 55# spring installed like they used to come for more road feel instead of the late C3 wimpy 40 pound spring. They used to sell for around $90. You can do a search under Jim Shea, he has discussed this several times before.

If you blew one of your control valve to assist cylinder hoses (gushing not dripping), you would have power assist in only one direction until (very shortly) you completely ran all of the fluid out and then you would have no power assisted steering. Shortly after that you would most likely damage the internals in the pump from lack of lubrication.

BTW, most stop leak chemicals actually attack rubber seals and cause them to swell. This does stop the leak in a lot of cases. It is not a long term fix. It can cause harm to seals that were good before adding the stop leak.

So you're saying that the local Napa dealer has the rebuilt kits in stock for the control valve?

Thanks for clearing that up jcswm, mine's leaking also but I'm wondering whether a rebuilt kit would be better since it's never been done.

I was glad to see this tread, since I am also having a problem with the power steering valve on my 70. I was greasing the steering linkage, and went to add to the grease in the fitting on the power steering valve. I was adding grease, and before the joint was full, I noticed some of the grease oozing out of the adjusting screw at the end of the valve.

I had previously noticed a small leak out of the end of the adjusting screw.

Does this mean that my internal seal is bad? I have been afraid to start the car, since I don't want to circulate the grease inside the PS fluid.

Anyone else see this?
