Default timing marks

The mark on the harmonic balancer is about 180 degrees out. The car runs ok but I want to see what the timing is set at. I was told that the harmonic balancer is pressed on to the center section and can slip. I was told I need to replace the balancer. Anybody ever heard of this?

There for a while on here, it seemed that about once a week, people had balancers that had had the outer ring slip and gave erroneous timing readings. Yeah its possible. Rent a puller and pull the balancer and install a new one.

Set the mark on the balancer to the zero indicator on the timing tab.Pull the distributor cap and if the rotor is at the number 6 tower, pull the distibuter, and re install so the number 1 tower is aligned with the rotor.

The odds of a slipping balancer lining up exactly 180 degrees fro correct is slim to none. The odds someone put the distributor in 180 degrees out is 50/50.

It is a very common problem - happens all the time. Do a TDC verification to verify that it has slipped. If it has, you need to replace it. You can e-mail me for my TDC verification paper if you need instructions on the process:
