Default Clutch adjustment....

How do I adjust the clutch? I have to push the pedal down to the floor to change gears. So far that I am hitting the switch for the high beams. This is a problem at night anyway. How much travel would be considered normal in most cases? Thanks in advance for any input.

Here's a picture of the link that comes from the pedal and goes to the Z-bar (upper right of the picture). This is where you adjust the linkage. If you look close, you'll see a nut on each side of the pivot. Loosen the one on the right, then turn the other nut to move the Z-bar to get the correct free play. Then tighten up the first nut to lock it together. It's easy to do.

I've always had to push the pedal to the floor to change gears (unless you are racing). This is pretty normal. Any less, and you're only partially disengaging the clutch.
I agree with the setting of 1 inch of free play at the top of the clutch travel.

Have you checked your GM Service Manual for your car? I have 66, 71 and 72 manuals and they have a clutch adjustment procedure for each. I think you will find that it is actually avery easy to do with the GM book in hand.

Clutch to floor sucks and at night I am sure the passing motorists do not appreciate me flashing my brights at them when I shift.
