Just went through this on my 81. They dont seem to be glued in, but because of the material and the fact that they have been there so long, they dont want to come out. I was able to do my testing by taking a jumper from the vac source to each other (vent,heat,a/c, def) for testing. Whatever you do, dont buy an aftermarket controller, they dont work. Got two from ecklers, ended up removing my whole dash trying to find another problem, only to buy a factory GM unit, which they still make, and all worked.
I went through hell with this thing and i've always said, Factoy only when available. Good luck. Post how you make out, i'm curious.
I thought so. But my first step was to see if I had vacuum going all of the way to the switch. If I had that, then I could check each. What about cutting and spicing. They are so tiny! what size are they anyway?
I believe they are 1/8". I did cut a couple of mine then used 1/8" inside diameter yellow tygon tubing to reconnect. I have some i can send if you need it. worked fine and they wont leak. If you have vacuum at the source, then use a jumper piece to go from vac source to each other, if that works , get a new controller from GM,
What is yellow tygon tubing? I am sure I can get it here, I just don't know the application. I will cut and test seeing what I have. The t that my supply vac comes from is large on both ends, but the t that the 1/8 fits on has a tiny hole. I cleaned it with a torch tip cleaner, it just seems awful small. I guess you just don't need much volume.
Yeh, you dont need a lot of volume. Tygon is a type of tubing that is of good quality and doesnt dry and crack over time. Also is fuel/oil/solvent resistant. dont know what year vette you have. mine is 81. the tubing i used is 1/4" outside diameter, 1/8 inside diamerter. If the outside diameter of your vac line is 1/8, then this same would work fine. If not, when you cut your line, cut 1/2" extra off and bring it to the shop w you and try it in some other sizes.
OK,I took the black plastic housing off the back and removed the soft plastic and tested. Bad diaphram on the recirculate door. This tubing looks like air lines on 18 wheelers, 4wd etc. I am making new runs tomorrow. If they have air line in this size, couplers are generally available.
Big question, There is the black plastic bracket, the white plastic actuator with the black rubber valve washer thing in between. There is nothing on here to hold the white to the black tightly. I think it is missing some sort of push in clamp that would pop into a rectangular hole in the black plastic. Is this correct? Would you have one of these pop in deals or some idea of what I need.
