Have had my vette for a long time and the bumper has always looked a bit ,wavey' Is there any remedy for it or if I put a new one on will it still be 'wavey' looking when painted. it's just annoying thats all.
Original style urethane bumpers will become progressively wavy over time. The older they are (or the more times they have been painted), the more likely they are to have waves in them. This doesn't mean the bumper is no good. As long as the bumper remains pliable it should have life left in it. Because they are made of urethane, even when new, they are rarely perfect... but they can take some abuse without experiencing permanent damage.
There are fiberglass bumpers and semi-flexible bumpers available from the aftermarket. Tru Flex is one version available from Toledo Pro. http://www.toledopro.com/truflex.html
These do look better than the typical urethane when painted and will hold their shape much better. However when they hit something, the fiberglass ones in particular, will almost always experience some permanent damage.
wavy is part of the problem with urethane bumpers.
there are better aftermarket ones including fiberglass.
I am also experiencing shrinking of the nose on my 79. the sides are pulling a bit away from the fenders. Im not going to replace. Its factory original.
I also know that if I do the fiberglass one, I loose all flexabilty incase I bump into something.
