Steering column
My 81 steering column has some problems. Did 81's come with tilt and telescoping columns? Mine only tilts. There is a lever on the right side behind the lock cylinder but it doesn't do anything. The tilt lever is on the left side and it works. The steering wheel doesn't lock and the key doesn't turn backwards to accessory location. I think the car was a theft recovery at some time because the vin number is etched into the windows, t-tops, and wheels. Maybe the steering column was broken and not repaired properly in the past.

The lever behind the key would be to return the key to the position so you can remove it, if your key can turn back to that position without the lever it is broke. The telescoping position is released by a ring on the backside of the horn button that will move left or right. Easy to miss if you don't know what to look for.
