Default 1977 alternator question..

I have an issue where my pulley keeps getting loose... and the cooling fan then rattles and sounds like hell...a few questions
is there an exploded image of the pulley and it's mounting to the alternator out these? my haynes manual does not get spacific..
are these pulleys standard on GM older alternators?
thanks

Is there a lock washer under the nut? Is your belt way too tight?

The belt tension is normal...
It does have a washer I'll need to check if it's a lock washer...
I'll post pics.

The alternator pulley and shaft are tapered, so they can "lock" together when tightened.
If the pulley has come loose, then it may have damaged the taper faces of the shaft and/or pulley. In which case they won't be able to "lock" together, as they should.
This will allow the pulley to loosen again and exacerbate the problem.
I would remove the pulley and check for damage. Replacement is probably the easiest solution if that is your problem.

If no damage is visible, make sure you torque the nut up good and tight, and use a thread locking compound to keep it there.

and make sure that there is a split lock washer under that nut. GM put it there for a reason. I don't know what the exact torque specs are for the nut, but it's very tight.
