I need to get a new alternator for my '75 L82 with A/C.
I've checked a number of parts places including the standard Corvette catelogs.
Prices range from $30 to $150+ for chrome ones. And the amps go from 42 to 100.
This car is an occassional driver and not a numbers/parts correct.
I don't want to under-"amp" nor buy more than I need. By the same token, I don't want spend more than necessary, but I don't want to go "on the cheap" and buy junk that will damage the car.
Kenn, going too big won't be a problem with the exception of an alt that's too big for it's own britches.
Some of the 135 amp alts you see advertised are going to burn up on you.
I would get something at least 60 amps or more.
Have you considered upgrading to a newer style alternator? Installing a CS130 or a CS144 is very easy and will get you a lot more usable power at low RPMs.
I have a Black alt. bought from Summit and also a Chrome one that are both one wire alt. The chrome one I have had problems with, the black one works fine. Note they are one wire. I would sell both together for $60 plus shipping. I have added dual fans etc. and upgraded big time to handle the amps.
