A picture from the November 2001 Hot Rod Magazine:
Is it a Corvette?
Nope. It's a 1964 Pontiac Banshee
The description sounds pretty rough <actually, just finished reading the article and it appears it was built pretty well for a prototype>, but it apparently was an attempt by John DeLorean to one-up the Corvette.
"Pontiac almost beat Chevrolet to the Coke bottle design body, with their 1965 Banshee, a two seater convertible sports car that would have been hefty competition for the Corvette. GM stopped it, and then Pontiac president John DeLorean later became president of Chevrolet."
Thats not all, The Excitement division also had a two seater Bonneville Concept car in the early fifties, Guess what.... It looks like a 53 Vette. Then the banshee concept you see here Pontiac wasn't looking to stomp out the Vette they wanted a gap-bridger vehicle that was a powerful affordable two seater for those who could not afford a corvette. In my opinion, the Corvette should have belonged to the "excitement" division from day one, it fbetter fits the profile of that company. But, I love the Corvette and wouldn't have it any other way!
Yeah, and those Firebirds kinda look a bit like Camaros, dont they?? :) It wouldnt have been unprecedented to have 2 very similar cars, a Pontiac and a Chevy, built on the same platform.... in fact it would have been fairly typical. MJ
I remember. Your post brought back memories. That design would still sell today; it truly is a beautiful car. Looks like a Jag. The more things change, the more they remain the same. DeLorean ended up in jail but that is another story.
