Default Quick question about a paint job

If you have a Vette with original paint and it's getting kinda thin do you really need to strip it down? Thanks.

You should remove the old paint at least down to the primer. Most Vettes had lacquer on them, and lacquer is very unstable when topcoated with other products.

But that will also be lacquer primer under that original topcoat....

I thought that first coat of primer/sealer over the 'glass substrate was epoxy. Is that incorrect...? If it's lacquer, it needs to be removed before applying most "modern" primers and topcoats.

I thought the early C3s simply had lacquer primer/surfacer. If not someone will
correct me

Today's paint technology does not allow for thick paint applications as we used to be able to get away with. Too thick an application, including painting over previous paint leads to failure. (ie: spider cracking and adhesion problems)

Today's paint thickness is measured in thousands of an inch.

I have an 80 and i painted it my self over 2 years ago and it still looks great. I used a good wax wash and sanding wirh 220 wet sand paper. I made sure that every inch was sanded with no shiney spots. Then i used a good quality prima sealer, two coats of color and 3 coats of clear. I am not a painter by trade so I had some orange peal. After it sat for 4 days i sanded it with 1200 and 1800 wet sand paper, used a buffer with polishing compound then a glaze and after 2 months buffed it with a good quality wax and it looks as good today as it did when it was new. If your paint thats on your car is solid i think the new paint will hold up very well.
