Default 700R questions

I plan to install a 700R during the winter and have questions:

First is reliability: When I ask at junkyards if they have a 700R, they answer no, because this tranny is always busted on the cars they get in..
As I understand you can modify the 700R to make it stronger. What kind of modification are involved, new heavier clutches? Is this something I can do myself?

So far I have managed to track down only one that is said to be ok, that's from a 1987 Caprice. I guess this will be the 30 spline type?

Versions: They all ask if I need the passenger, diesel or truck version. I have never heard this mentioned at the forum. Do I have to use a passenger version? What's the difference between them?

Crossmember: As I want true duals I will have to get/make a new crossmember.
I would think that the crossmember plays a an important role in protecting the passengers in a side collision. And this is the reason GM had designed it to be straight and heavy?
The Bowtie crossmember design looks smart, but I assume it will be a risk factor if you have an accident?

The first 700R4s in 1982 were weak. When you find one and have it rebuilt, make sure you get the "updates" to make it strong like the ones in the early 90s. Then you will be good to go.
