Default body mounts #!!@@&!

I need some direction. I just put my body back on the frame. I used the same body mounts that were previously installed. I only took the body off for paint and the mounts were installed by the guy I bought the car from fairly recently. The mounts are aluminum not rubber or poly. Here is my problem--all eight mounts had the same width alum spacer, the front two mounts had two shims apiece installed. The body sits good on the front and back mounts but the 4 middle are too low. The spacer can spin because the body is not sitting on them. What is the procedure to do this??? Should I put shims on the ones in the middle so they are now tight??? It is a 71 ttop and I want to ensure the doors will line up correctly.

thanks Gary

It will be a trial and error method but put two shims under the four center mounts and add shims on #1 & #4 till all have tension. With a coupe you have very little door gap adjusment.

Yes I would take the two off the front to start.

If you are absolutely sure you have all the shims in the proper location, I'll bet the body has sagged a little while it was off. If it's only off by 1 or 2 shims thickness, the body mount bolts will close it up.

I feel your pain.
I'm in body gap purgatory.
I removed my aluminum bushings and replaced them with poly and ever since the gaps at the rear of my doors are way off. But I'm sick of messing with them. Once I get the car on its wheels, hopfully in two weeks, then i'll do some final adjustments and probably do a thread on it. Let me know what you do to adjust them.

There was a good article in one of the Vette mags a while back on adjusting the body fit with shims. I don't remember all of the specifics but I think this is the basic idea:

Work on the 4 inner mounts first to get the body sitting evenly on the frame, shimming as necessary.

Use shims on the front and rear mounts to get the gaps even.

i agree with big g. if the body set on the frame before you lifted it, and you were satisfied with the gaps, it's just sag. let it sit for a few days before you add shims.

Look at your door gaps, are they a little wider than before taking the body off? When you tighten the four central mounts the bolts will bring the door gaps closer. If they were good before removing the body they should be right now. The caveat is as long as rust or rust repair hasn't changed anything. Tighten the bolts slowly and monitor the door gaps. They will tell you what is right. Adding shims to the #2-3 body mount location can be a challenge. Stop at your local body shop supply and buy some horseshoe type shims. These will slip under the mount bolts more easily and simplify the job.

The shims are exactly the way they came off. Only 2 shims each side upfront. It seems to be only a couple of shims off on the middle mounts. The doors did line up pretty good before, they are still off now. I will try to tighten up the middle ones tomorrow, hopefully they will close/pull in.

thanks

On a vert you add shims to#4 to make the gap at the rear top of the door less.
