Default pypes exhaust system

Has anyone bought their exhaust system and have it installed? I was hoping they would make it in 3 inch, but it is only available in 2 1/2 inch. Really would like to here about a real world test. Open headers dyno vs the pypes system on a 454 or bigger engine in the upper rpm ranges. Ron B.

Never heard of pypes. Is that a brand or shop? Got a link?
We need to know what your engine combo is. You may or may not need 3". I just had my muffler shop build me a custom 3" system with an x-pipe just behind the trans cross member, 3" Dynomax Ultra Flows, and 3 1/2" tips. They did a great job, it sounds awesome and it flows REALLY well. In fact, we couldn't believe how well the rear wheel hp numbers were with full exhaust. I think my system is about as dialed in as you're going to get.
As for a pre-made 3" system....not going to happen. Way too many variables to get it to work. Only possibility would be with all stock components but if you're all stock then you don't really need a 3" exhaust.

I called Pypes myself around a week ago,and told them they'd have some business from the Forum, and they were not interested in going to the 3" setup.

I have a custom 3" system now, that I unfortunately had to modify to clear my th400 trans install. The 3" system was built around my 700r4,but wouldn't clear the crossmember I used to install the th400.

I ended up using Hooker collector extensions to move everything back out of the way.

Mods.

...best thing is a custom exhaust...said this i'd personally would not go over 2.5'' internal dia exhaust for powers around or slightly less then 400/450hp, the 3'' dia exhaust will robb you torque at low revs and you really dont need it (pls believe me..i've tried quite a few exhausts on my '77, included side pipes), the X pipes will help the sistem flow but of course you'll have sound and tone radically modded...you could like it or maybe you won't.

i have a 2 3/4'' dia undercarriage exhaust for my 575hp 406ci engine...X pipe just after the crossmember and streight through race mufflers...

exhaust sistem is always a compromise beetwin flow at different rev levels, sound, power you've got, and other iussues.

Thanks for all the replys. Some asked for more info. The car is a 30 over 454, 990 GM heads,2 inch headers, lunati 243 in 251 ex @.050, 3000 stall, plan on upgrading to 4000. 825 RS race demon. it spends 99 percent of its time at the track. I would like run it on the street every once in awhile. I really think 3 inch is what I need. My C5 works just fine with LGM 3 inch setup and turns less rpm than the 71. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not willing to take the chance. Sunspot I hope you're right about the 3 inch in July. I will call the after the 4th and let everyone know If I can order a 3 inch system.

Just called pypes today . Talked with the tech that designed the 2 1/2 inch system. There were No plans to build a 3" system.

I am very concerned about the exit differences between the round tip, the square tips, and the turned down exits on the later years. I am going to wait.
