Default Cam suggestions please

I am rebuilding my 350 motor from my 71 coupe. I have decided on a new steel 400 crank to make a 383 stroker. I have a set of World products sportsman 2 heads, holley 780 carb and GM aluminum high rise dual plane intake. Would like a cam that has really good power from take off. Don't want to explore the limits of my tach! I am going with new 6 inch rods and Keith Black flat top pistons. Have heard that I should be making about 400 to 420 hp with my setup. What type of cams has anyone used with the 383 setup and what would you recommend. Thanks for the help.

Try going to http://ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos.html
They have a bunch of dyno'ed small block engines with Sportman Heads using cams from mild to almost streeable.

More cubes make a cam tamer. I have, as you put it the upper edge. Cranes lowest solid mech with 238/248 @.050 Then I also have 1.6 comp cams roller tips for something like .520/540 lift. It runs nice. I'm running @10.5 with ported 186 casting heads. So your up on me with II's I have had this motor running for over ten years. I would never consider a hydro cam. If you have the money rollers are a real option. I have seen some very big - that is bigger than my spec's which run very nice out on the street.

Tom, you didn't mention your gearing but I think you might like the Comp XE-274 or, considering your desire for high rpm, something similar in a roller version. In my 327, the XE-274 provides good drivability above 1500 rpm and excellent response beyond that point. In my application, it seems to peak at about 5,700 but pulls strongly to 6200 (as far as I've taken it but I don't think there would be any benefit beyond there). In a 383, the same cam should give similar results but starting a few hundred rpm sooner. Needless to say, I'm very pleased with my cam and it's ability to make power where I can use it. I've considered taking my engine to 383" and would probably use the same cam but retard it by 4º and use to 1.6 rockers if I did.

I am running a Richmond 3.70 gear set in my vette. I also have a Muncie close ratio tranny, M-21. I really would like good off the line grunt, but it sure is fun to spin it up to 6 grand now and then! I had a crane solid lifter cam in the motor, did not have much under 2500 rpm. Thanks again for the info!
