Default Pitman hell

I finally got the nut off of the Pitman shaft on my Jeep box. Now, the arm won't come off for anything. I'm about ready to bolt it to the wall for leverage...any suggestions on how to make the stupid thing move? I've thought about putting a cut in the arm, but I'm afraid of damaging the splines on the shaft. My rusty 30 year old Corvette arm popped right off...

A buddy of mine, had a 76, had to use a little heat to get his to come off of his gear box. He used a small torch and heated the arm around the opening and gave it a few whacks and it jumped right off.

Mine on my 70 gear box popped right off like yours.

Rent, borrow or buy a pitman arm puller.

Have done many of these on 4x4's. Definately a little heat and it will pop off. Tighten your puller down very tight and then hit it with the heat.

Thanks! I hope propane is hot enough...I don't have an oxy/acetylene rig here.

Not familiar with the Jeep box but if there is a seal close to where you are heating make sure you take steps to protect the seal.

Puller, heat and a bash with a hammer and it should pop right off.

What is the advantage of using a jeep box and which one?

Took me a while but I found the info. What's interesting is this is done to eliminate a steering ram but still retain power steering. In our wheeling jeeps we drill and tap the Saginaw 76 boxes and attach a ram for more steering power.

Finally got the arm off. A bit of heat to the underside of the arm (so I wouldn't cook any seals in the box), nailing it to my deck railing, and using a cold chisel and 2lb. drill hammer in conjunction with the puller finally busted it free.

We don't need that much force in a Corvette, and there are many advantages to having the control valve between the steering column and the gearbox, rather than after the Pitman arm.

The one that works for this application is a Saginaw 600, not a 76, btw.
