What made the l82 on a 1980 so special? I want to rebuild on a budget and im lookin to make a lil north of 400hp and some major torque. i will be throwing in a 200r4 someday but for now needs to be on stock converter. im thinking new cam, heads, intake, headers? keep the carb and internals?
Well it's basically the same as the other year L-82s. Forged bottom end, flat top pistons and '962' cam. It will be tough to make 400 HP and keep a stock converter. You'll do 350HP pretty easy, but you'll need more cam to build more HP and that will require more stall. Just as an example, and knowing you can not compare these cams directly to the L-82 cam, the largest Comp Cams with a stock converter are the 268H, XE268 and the 270 magnum which all have the same or less duration than the stock L-82 cam. They do however have equal or more lift, but have more aggressive ramp rates and are ground on 110 LSAs designed for high RPM HP.
See the other recent L-82 thread on heads. You'll need some decent heads, headers, and 2 1/2" exhaust system. Your Q-jet is a decent street carb and the HEI will need to be rebuilt and recurved. I'm not sure you could fit a Performer RPM intake under your hood, but a Weiand 8004 or regular Performer should fit.
Go with the 383 stroker. That is the easy way to get the major torque numbers you want. The cost is not that much over a rebuild if it requires the block to be bored.
You might find the stock converter works fine with the added torque. If you are on a budget you can keep the intake and exhaust manifolds for now and maybe do them later.
