Default engine difference

hi! i have a 76 coupe and a wrecked 82 trans-am.the vette has the small block 350 and the trans-am has the 305,and i would like to know what the difference is in them.is the blocks the same? just wondering if it is worth while to keep the 305 for rebuilding later on, and are any of the steering parts on the trans-am compatable, such as the rack and pinion and the tranny, auto on both vehicles.----thanks---john

The blocks are the same outside dimensions. The internals of the 305 are good for door stops. The 305 was an emission motor and never really made it for performance. You can build up a 305 but why. Small cubes, terrible heads and much more. I would not save the 305. Find a good 350 block and put in a stroker crank and you will have an easy 350+ HP motor with mild mods. The steering is much different from the Vette to the Trans am. I doubt anything would fit without some major mods.

Part it out. Sell the parts on Fleabay. Someone will need some of the parts you have. Plus it is more $$$ for the Vette!

Actually the crank and rods of a 305 are same dimensions as a 350. All of the external things can also be used on a 350 like water pump and pulleys-just make sure you don't mismatch the pulleys and pumps or you'll have a hell of a mess. If you got plenty of money buy all new, but some of the stuff can be used for cores if nothing else.
