I'm getting the bug to get a set of Hooker Chrome side pipes. Anyone out there care to comment? They look awaome!!! How do you keep them looking good? Pros and Cons?
As far as cleaning goes...I use Never-Dul. Works great on Chrome. And as far as inserts A guy on the forum here makes great looking, flowing and sounding inserts for them his name is..... uhhhhhhh.... damn I can't remember!!!!! I know my girlfriend has all his info!!! they are on my Chrismas list!!!! DOH!!!!!
The downside to chrome headers is they don't stay pristine very long.
The pipes near the heads disscolor almost imediately.
I had mine Jet Hot coated after they started looking funky, and if I had it to do over I would buy the coated
system from go...
I want them but was talked out of them by several people...I think that if I can find a car (c-3) that came factory with side-pipes.....I would definantly buy it
Ive toyed with the idea, and Ive been mostly talked out of it.
The positives are:
They look really cool / have a cool sound
The downside:
They get really hot and you can burn the heck out of your leg when you get out or burn the leg of the passanger.
They can be more restrictive in exhaust flow than mufflers.
I dont have that much experience so dont let me talk you out of it, just my $.02 :)
Another downside is COST....I looked around and could not find what I wanted for under 1200 bucks..I am putting that money into the engine instead..It may not look as cool but it will have more bang :jester
I love the look & sound of sidepipes on a C3. I will be looking to getting a pair of JCL's spiral sidepipes maybe this winter/ spring :D . You do have to be CAREFUL to not get burned by them.
I think they look awesome, and on my black Vette with some Torq Thruster II's, I just can't imagine anything cooler  My wife wants me to get them too, but I'd have to make some sort of flap or something that she could roll out the side so she could get out without burning her legs. Damn the cost, the restriction AND the burns, they're just too cool to pass up!!!
I'm currently running the Dynomax Side Pipes on my '76 'Vette and I love the look and the sound of them. I will be selling these pipes off once I get the big block installed. However, I am now addicted to side pipes (I love the sound & look) so I have a set of Hooker Header Side Pipes that will be installed on the big block. I decided to go with the black side pipes because the chrome finish turns blue to easily. I figure this way I can always repaint them with high temperature black paint myself.
I would have to say go for the side pipes :yesnod:
Mine was an original sidepipe car but the pipes were long gone, so I made my own 4" pipes, similar to the Hookers but without the headers. I did the whole job for right at $300.00 installed, and the sound is incredible! I have, however, burned myself once. It was worth it, and now I always warn my passengers :yesnod: I will eventually get a set of reproduction factory style pipes.
I say go for them too. I paid just a little over a $1,000 for the Hooker Header Sidepipes through Jet Hot already coated with my choice over inserts. I also got a Corvette Forum discount through them.
