A friend (petty44 on the forum, 75 convertible) of mine and I installed a Quartz clock kit in my 71 this weekend. Not very hard but the directions that came with the clock were a little weak. It came in a nice box with Corvette emblems on the outside but the directions had a picture of some old square clock probally out of a Impala or something like that. We finally figured out that some of the old gears need to be used. Put everything back together and used a 12 volt power supply I have to test and it works GREAT. Then we noticed that the second had was not "ticking" like a quartz clock should do so we figured that Ecklers or Borg ( the kit maker..you will be assimulated) messed up and sent the more expensive "original movement" kit. I would have bought this kit but the quartz is cheaper. So now I have a working clock with original movement. YEA :D :yesnod:
Changed all the light bulb for the center guages too. Might as well while I had the dash apart. I am sooooooo happy. Only problem is my setting rod threads for the **** are stripped. If anyone has an old clock laying around with this rod and wants to get rid of it I'll take it off your hands.

Re: Installed a clock kit this weekend!!!! (theandies)
John........Just did the same job on mine. But I ended up buying a complete clock with new quartz movement already installed from an E-bay auction. The seller was Corvette Central. Ended up paying $74.00 (and no shipping).
I noticed the same with my second hand movement in the new clock. The second hand "sweeps" vs. "ticks". No complaints either!! I didn't look into the guts of the removed clock, but I heard broken parts (most likely the spring) inside the casing.
Actually having a working clock in the car might end up being a bad thing  , as I will really see how much (quality) time I am spending behind the wheel. Most likely won't be able to test that assumption til next spring though :cry :flag

Maybe the quartz clock sweeps but every quartz clock I have ever seen has that tick to it. I like it though. It keeps excellent time, I drove mine to work this morning and the clock with right on this morning. I think I paid $50 something for the kit. I had the same problem with my original clock. I took the center dash out a few years ago to install carpet and thought while I was in ther I might as well try to fix the clock. When I took the back off of it some very small pieces fell on the floor....ugh. I am going to keep the old one "just in case".

Re: Installed a clock kit this weekend!!!! (theandies)
I fixed my original clock in the 1972 last weekend, and the spring/cam and gears in the original clock works have a definite "tick" Part of the problem as the points were worn out, and the second must have been from the factory because the +12 volt "arm" had too much play and was shorting out into the clock gears. So.... a little solder to rebuild the point, dremel tool cutting to re-shape the arm, and some tuner cleaner/lubricant for the gear, and the clock is working better than installed from the factory. Cost me about $0.27 in electricity, solder and tuner cleaner :yesnod: :smash:
