Default 71 Rough Engine

I have about 2,000 miles on my built 350 engine with 4sp trans. Comp Cams Extreme Energy 274 cam, 10:1 compression, stock distributor converted to electronic by DUI, Edelbrock 750 carb. It has started to run rough and miss. Plugs fouled out, I replaced them and after 25 miles its starting to do the same thing all over. I have blocked off all card and manifold vacuum fittings. In tinkering with it I have found that opening a capped vacuum fitting the engine increases in RPM and runs smoother. Doesn't eliminate the rough condition but it improves. What would cause an engine to run better with an open vaccum fitting?

You are running rich. Inducing a vaccum leak by removing a cap off a vaccum port actually leans the mixture a bit which is why you are seeing a slight improvement by doing that.

I would really look into replacing the igniton with a better arrangement, like MSD. You may not ABSOLUTELY need it, but the car will run A LOT better, IMHO.
