I am looking for something better looking brackets and pulleys for 1974 vette smallblock engine. I want to retain the old alternator and orginal ps pump. Car has no ac . Anybody have any ideas?
I know there are many high end systems available but not needed for this project. Aluminium brackets preferred.
You can use the serpentine system from a late 80s/early 90s Camaro or Firebird. The power steering pulley is easily swapped with the correct tool, and the alternator pulley is just held on with a big nut. If you don't have A/C, you'll need an A/C delete pulley. Your P/S pump will bolt right up. It's also a great excuse to upgrade to a CS series alternator.
I saw a complete C4 setup off of an 89 go begging last week on Ebay with a $29 opening bid. There is another out there this week for $125. With both the Vette and Camaro serpentine setups, you get some heavy duty, but decent looking aluminum brackets. Biggest drawback for you is that reverse rotation water pump is required. NBD though, they aren't expensive unless you want polished or chrome.

The only thing to watch out for is that the C4 system uses a specialized water pump. It's aluminum - good. It's twice the cost of the Camaro/Truck pump - bad. It doesn't have a heater fitting - ack. I found a cast-iron remanned truck pump at the parts store for less than $25 with the heater port on top, it made the setup much easier.
Give a look at conceptonepulleys.com I just finished a rebuild and didn't have much $$$ left by the time I got to pulleys. These guys have lots of choices and the prices seem reasonable.
Don't the pulleys on the older PS pumps attach differently on the newer pumps? One's a pressfit and the other held in by a bolt? I'm not really sure.
I was going to pick up a rebuilt pump from autozone for a 88-92 camaro, someone mentioned in another thread that the pressure is different on the camaro and our vettes. There was metion of just swapping "springs" out?
I'm not sure what pumps have a bolt on pulley but even the GM pumps up into the 21st century are using press fit pulleys.
The pressure is regulated by the spring and plunger in the back of the pump. Where the pressure line threads in is a hex shaped bung that you can remove with a crescent wrench. Pull the bung out, then the spring, and use a magnet to get the plunger out. Do the same on the new pump, and just reverse the process to put the Corvette spring and plunger in the new pump.
If that's still confusing I can take some pics at home of how to remove the bung, spring, and plunger.
Be careful about year though, and I don't know which ones, but some pumps had a different rotation to the bolt pattern and some of them might sit differently after it's installed.
If the spindles and body are exactly the same and all I would need to do is swap pulleys then I would rather go that route. There's nothing wrong with my 82 PS pump and it'll save me about $75

Anyone know what I need to swap?
Thanks
I have a press-fit serpentine pulley, so they didn't change between 77 and the late 80s. I think the last year for the splined, bolt-on pulley was around 74 or 75.
Installation was pretty simple - use kit to remove v-belt pulley. Buy the right bolts to install pump to bracket. Press on serpentine pulley with the kit. The only annoying thing is the need to pull the pulley to remove the pump, which is different than the old Rube Goldberg bracket from the v-belt days.
