I want to add magnaflow mufflers to my 74 car. My car is out of town getting paint but I still want to order the mufflers. The mufflers that come off were 4x9 oval. They are 14" in body length and about 18" in total length. They magnaflow mufflers measure 11" in body and 17" in length. I would like to buy the bigger ones that measure 14" in the body and 20" in the total length. I think the bigger ones are closer to what I have, but I don't know if they will fit. Has anyone put on aftermarket mufflers that could tell me what would fit in the car. I really want to order the right ones because I won't be able to send them back. I'm also going to go with 2.5" exhaust. Hope someone can help. Thanks
If you order the larger ones, you will only need to cut one inch of pipe off either end and they will be the same as the mufflers you took off the car. The body is already the same length. Should be no big deal.
Any thoughts on what position the in and outs are in. The ones that came off it have a outside in and a center out. Any thoughts on that. Thanks for your help.

I have magnaflows on my 74r 383 with 2.5" pipes....i deliberately got the s/s ones with offset in to help keep the noise at sensible levels.....i have an x pipe crossover and no other muffling....i also used the droop down outlets for noise reduction around town...boy do they sound fantastic between 3500 rpm and 7000 rpm....
I have Magnaflows, Stainless Steel with offset in & out (2-1/4). Ordered from Jegs part number 64214335. I had a muffler shop put them on and they fit perfertly where the stock ones were. However I believe the inlet should have been a center postion, either way they do tuck right in. The sound is very low and mellow. In fact for me, almost too quiet as I am considering changing them now.
