Maybe I'm missing something, I've been searching but cannot find how to determine what my Tranny is. I have an '81 350 automatic, and would like to get the B&M Shift Improver but am not sure which of the 2 is the right kit.
Any help on determining what the tranny is?
350 modulator points towards the back of the car, 400 points out the side towards the door.
Also 350 has a passing gear cable going to the carb, 400 has an electric wire going to the gas pedal.
The oil pans are a different shape the link below will show you what the 350 oil pan gasket looks like and if you look to the right on the same page you will see a 400 pan gasket which some say looks like the state of Texas.
I disagree. The 81 automatics came with a TH350C. Unless it was changed along the way, that's what it should have.
If you're looking for a shift kit, make sure that it's compatible with the C, which is a lock up torque converter version. Otherwise, you'll lose the lock up.

I installed a B&M kit in my 80, 350c lock up converter . You will need a Kit for a 80-86 350c. I installed the street/strip mode.It gets a little rubber in 2nd, with the 190 hp L48. I was impressed. Do yourself a favor & pull your pan and look for friction material, BEFORE you place your order, if you find dark gray material in the pan your tranny may not live long!
