How to Remove Auto Shift Knob

How to Remove Auto Shift ****
78 Coupe Auto Transmission. Stupid question. I have the button off the shift lever but can't remove the ****. I have tried turning and pulling but it won't move. Don't want to break anything. Is the **** threaded on? Any tricks getting it off?

Thanks guys. Big water pump pliers and a towel got it free. I just did not want to twist on it really hard without some reassurance that what I was doing was right.
**** smells of cigarettes. But the whole car did when I got it. And when I removed the parking brake pad and the shift console there was cigarette ashes everywhere underneath. It was a different world back then.
