I have an 82 and the generator light is stay on. It is not full brightness. When you turn the key to the on position without cranking it comes on full bright. But, when you start the car it stays on dim. The battery is getting 14.5 volts when the engine is running and the battery is not going dead. Any help would be appreciated.
Mine did this when I first got the car. Shortly there after the alternator began to overcharge the battery, 18 volts. If I were you I would change the alternator I believe it should be putting out closer to 15.5 volts with the engine running. Remember its internally regulated.-TK
I disagree, charging voltage max is between 14 and 15. My old nissan pickup did this to me. It was a loose ground. Bring your alternator and have it checked, but I think its good.
Mine turned out to be a bad diode pack. The battery was still staying charged, but for how long? It cost about $20 for the part. Some people said I should have just got a rebuild, but I wanted to stay original.
Mine was also dim on my 80 ,I put in new alt with no change. I went to the local GM dealer and got a copy of a service order that said this was normal and to put a filter in front of the bulb to block the light. I have not done this yet. My car has done this for 2 years with no battery or charging problems
