HEI Tach Upgrade Question?

No, stock would have the mesh covered wire going to the starter as you saw, but the main tach power wire would go to the large connector under the brake booster, as stock. Trace the orange wire out to it's end, and see how it's powered/where it goes. if you just want to run your own wire, you can tap in to the main fuse panel under the drivers dash with a female lug and a 12 gauge wire and hook it to the IGN tab. Other end to the Batt tab on the Tach. There should be a plugged hole just above the fuse panel. C.

I just had my '73 tach converted to electronic($240) and kept the stock face. I also had my oil pressure gage converted too. Here's the guy to talk to:

Do I understand correctly that there are three ways how to run a new HEI distributor with a tach on my 69 Vette.
1) replace manual tach for 75 tach
2) convert original manual tach to electronic
3) install tach filter?
4) other options?

buy an HEI mechanical tach drive distributor. (From $60~150 on eBay)
No need to change your tachometer.

The tach filter will not make the tach run. It is installed in-line with the electronic tach to clean up the signal.
