I'm replacing the transmission filter in my 77's TH350. The new filter looks nothing like the old one, and in fact appears to install upside-down from the old one. Is this the right part?
I have a Fram filter kit FT1021 that I have yet to install in my 79 and it has the same filter as your old one. Looks like someone sold you the wrong one. Are the gaskets the same? On a related topic, how much fluid is required when changing the filter?
It's the kit that the computer swears is for a 77 TH350. I had to buy a second one today because I lost the little filter gasket out of the first one (not like the $5 kit is going to kill me), and it had the same filter again. The more that I think about it, the more that it looks sorta like an engine oil pickup filter. I think I'm going to go ahead and use it...if the stupid automatic grenades, it will give me a good excuse to buy a manual.
Here's a pic of the AC Delco replacement filter kit (68-77) I have for my 71 TH350. Instructions state that the filter removed from trans may appear different.
Here's another number for you to cross reference. Purolator. P221. I bought 3 of these over the last few years. All were correct(like your old one).
If I remember right, the first filter I bought a few years ago was wrong. Opened the box and "crap!". Took it back and looked it up in the book myself.

Before I switched to a 700R4, I replaced the filter in my TH350 twice, I bought the FRAM kit from Schucks both times. First time was the filter on the right - matched what was in the tranny when I bought the car, second time was the one on the left. Both of them fit the holes correctly, and I could see how the fluid could get filtered correctly on either one. I think Fram just changed the design for some reason.
I kinda liked the one on the right better, seemed more "filtery" than the screen. Whatever.
The new filter fit the valve body perfectly, so I'm just going to go with it. As near as I can tell it's just a different way of getting to the same result.

(The new filter is the clean one on the right.)
The filter on the left is washable-reusable, the one on the right is not. They both are correct for your trans. I like the version on the left except with a brass mesh screen. These are harder to find since they were replaced with the cheaper nylon mesh as your old oner.
