Am getting ready to rebuild the rear suspension. The struts, halfshafts and rest of the rear suspension look like they have never been off the car. I was told that the car was hit in left rear sometime long ago and upon examination it looks like the frame behind the trailing arms seems a little tweaked. The halfshaft and strutrod on the drivers side come out at aforward angle rather than straight toward the trailing arm as on the passenger side. The car drives fine and has been like this for years. I was wondering if anyone knows the particulars of fixing something like this. I would not attempt it but wonder if it is worth having a shop look at it given the costs and fact that it doesn't seem to effect driveability - at least the way I drive.
Because of the way the body sits on the frame I would say it couldn't be bent much. If it was the body wouldn't fit right. If the wheels are in the wells in the appropriate spot, and it drives fine without wearing tires, I would do some quick eyeball measurements to make sure the wheels are in the same spot on both sides and forget it.
Thanks for the advice. No jolts or anything, but looking at the wheels you can see that one is in slightly, maybe 1 inch different spot in the wheel well. I haven't done the work yet, so haven't had to deal with alignment. No problems with the body. Sounds like I should leave well enough alone- I just thought that if this was a (relatively) simple fix for a shop with the equipment I would consider.
I've noticed this condition on several cars and have wondered if it could be a function of how the body was assembled in the factory? It's not unusual to have mismatches on fender width, etc. Any opinions on this?
