Default 1972 Shoulder Belts

I have a 1972 stingray and I have the lapbelts only in it. They have the spring loaded belt roller that rolls up the extra belt when not in use.

It looks as if there is an area behind the seat where a shoulder belt enclosure is and that it might have had shoulder belts originally? I can't quite tell.

Did the 1972 come stock with shoulder belts all the time or was it an option or is this residual from an upgrade that got removed by a previous owner?

In the end I want shoulder belts since I don't want my face hitting that hard steering wheel in the event of an accident.

I see the Eckler's shoulder harness kit and am considering one of those.

I'm looking for comments and feeback from the voice of experience on this.

Thanks,
Ryan

There's been a few threads on belts this past couple of months, may want to do a search.
I bought the Eckler's belts for my 68 and they fit fine, but according to members that bought them for 70's Vettes, they don't fit, and had sent them back

Try Andover, don't have their website, but Google will find it

If you have the lapbelts in the car then this should be the soulution for you.

Shoulder belts in 72 were standard in coupes, optional in convertibles.

Do these shoulder belts interface with the existing lap belts somehow?

Cool. I've got the coupe, so I guess it was standard and removed for some reason.

cool. Do you have a belt reatiner that comes off the seat to keep the shoulder belt in the proper place? I think I saw something like that in the Eckelers kit and I am just checking if it was like that stock.

Here's a few pics of the shoulder belt on my 71. They should be the same on a 72. They passed thru an opening in the seat back and attached to the lap belt which is inserted into the latch. The difference in 72 from previous years is that the lap belt retracted as well as the shoulder belt..

If your '72 lapbelt buckle has the "rivet-head" gizmo on the top of the buckle, you have an original set of lapbelts. That rivet is so that the slot on the shoulder belt end can hook over it to set up the lap/shoulder belt set correctly. It may be difficult to come up with original shoulder retractor and belts, as that design was only available on '70-72 cars and aftermarket places don't have the volume of business to reproduce them. Ebay is your best bet. If you can come up with a working set that has worn out belt webbing, go to some fabric/upholstery supply places and see if you can match the color of your existing belts. Upholstery places can sew the new webbing to the start of the original belt material and create a good working belt that matches what you have. The original shoulder belt webbing was the same width of the lap belts, but was somewhat thinner. I found some lap belt material and redid both the lap and shoulder systems with the thicker webbing and it works out OK. The shoulder belts don't retract all the way when they are not installed, but they are fine after installing in the vehicle when run thru the back of the seat. Good luck with your project.
