How much is involved in replacing the pass. side exhaust manifold gasket on a 76 with Air. Looks like the rear compressor bracket is mounted to at least one of the center bolts and I can't see the front bolt. What's the proper procedure or would I be better off taking it to an exhaust shop and having them do it?
This job is a serious PITA. The AC compressor has to be moved over to the side, you have to work under the car and in very tight spaces. If you're really into doing it yourself go for it. The head-to-exhaust manifold surface is great coming from the factory and doesn't require a gasket (as previously posted), but older manifolds are generally warped enough to require gaskets/sealer. I'd suggest any good HIGH temp sealer/gasket to ensure you don't have to re-do the job/or pay to have it done a second time.
You might be able to remove all the manifold bolts and drop the manifold-exhaust pipe without dropping the pipe. Then slide in the gasket/sealer and re-torque. Might be more trouble than it's worth, then you have to loosen/remove the pipe to manifold studs/nuts - NO FUN.
How much do you like to lay on the garage floor/in the dirt and work in very tight spaces??????
