Default Is Setting the Timing with HEI Different?

Made a jumper for the TACH connection on the HEI and connected the Timing Light Tach connection to it. Trying to set timing on a 73-350 to 36* at 3000 RPMs. When revving the engine the RPM reading will not display?

36* total timing seems like a bit much, as for the tach on the timing light, well I have no good answer for you there, just get someone to sit in the car and hold it at or around 3k rpms, also you may want to keep it at or around 32* total timing, 36* seems a little high unless your using some sort of high grade gas.

Did you replace the blace w/pink lettering power resistance wire when you did your HEI swap?
You should post Lars anyway with this, if you need info. but the wire swap is crucial.

Have the HEI wiring kit from M,A.D., haven't installed it yet. I'll try making another jumper, this time soldering the terminal on.
The engine is a 73-350 with about 400 HP, I was advised to set the timing at 36* at 3000 RPM by a few people who seemed to know what they were talking about.
Why set it at 32* instead?

If you didn't bypass the resistance wire, you are probably getting as low a 4 volts to the HEI at higher RPM, that's why I suggested it. that may be why you cant' get a reading.

36* is generally accepted as the optimum....
