I will get the temp. dots and monitor the heat...If they are still too hot I will paint and monitor...
If that is still too hot...I will look into fabricating an aluminum heat shield (I already bought the stuff) and talk to neighbor Steve. He works for a industrial A/C installation and design company. Maybe we can use his shop at work to get some professional looking bends.
What you say about the skid plate... I might want to do that in the future too. I do bottom out fairly often ... very low.

As long as you wrap any exhaust pipe within a 12" linear distance from the spring, you should be well under the spring heat requirement. I cut some relief notches in my 1 1/4 inch aluminum strap to help it contour to my pipes. They are held on with a few hose clamps. The clamps are thin and do not catch things, keep the scew up off the bottom. The shields are already full of scrapes that would have shreaded the wrap had I not put them there. Paint the pipes with aluminum paint before the wrap, for better rust protection. I also coated my wrap with silicone high heat for water protection.
So for anyone thinking of doing this...here is the completed process.
I also have pictures of the T-56 Viper finally...and I will post them to an old blog and my photos...
I still have to get a hold of the old timer at VBP for the heat dots...but I can put my hand on the composite spring as soon as I get out of the car so I think it is going to be ok.
Hey....you did nice work on applying the wrap! You won't have any problem with harming the composite spring with exhaust heat now. You can send that picture of what you have to Gary at VB&P and ask for his opinion. He can tell right off if that will do the job. I spoke with him at the shop about the wrap and he recommended it as an option. Be careful going over things like tree roots, going off on the road shoulder and what have you. A couple of aluminum straps and hose clamps can preserve what you have done and extra work. Good luck!
One of my customers told me about this place. Check out their website at www.thermotec.com. Once there click products, then full line catalog, then look for the heat shield clamp. He really liked it. I recommended it to a couple of others to look at, but no feedback yet.
Just a thought.

P.S. Yes, call Gary and he can come up to my computer and check out the pics.

Hooker may still make sidemount headers with AIR bungs, but as for the cats... Cory1970's just didn't seem to work out so well...
I'm going to try & fab a heat shield for my '81 rear end with VBP dual mount tomorrow. If successful, I'll post some pics...
I've already done the header wrap thing and the spring is never too hot to grab with my hand. (although it does get quite warm)

I have a couple of those installed on my pipes where they go under the floorpans. I haven't driven the car extensively lately to see hot it does or doesn't get, although I fully insulated the floorpans too. There shouldn't be any chance for rust with these shields, as they clamp on with a small air gap. The clamps hold the material on tight, but allow the top portion to poof up a little, for air flow. This would alleviate the worry of scrapping off the header wrap.

I will give Gary a call sometime and tell him to go up and check out the pictures. Haven't checked the link yet but I will now.
Thanks to all at VB&P for helping...and of course Red and the other forum members.
