Default Power windows acting flakey

My drivers side power window seems to have what i thought was a faulty wire in the door harness so i replaced that but still no luck.
My drivers side window works when it wants to, some days i'll get in and it will go down and some it just wont, i cant figure out whats going on. The switch seems to work when i test it with my volt-o-meter, and i plug the passenger side switch in and it still doesnt work (the passenger side works just fine). Any ideas, could it be the motor? Also when i hit the switch i hear a clicking noise come from the driver side door.

Thanks,
Joe

I had the same problem. It turned outn to be the relay. It is located under the center console under the HVAC switch. Good luck.

cooljoe57,

I think I have the same issue with the passenger side. My window motors are new and it just seems to go up and down when it wants too. The voltage is at the window motor (12v) when I push the window switch either in the up or down direction. I can hear the window motor sorta click when I push the switch. I have exchanged the switch with the drivers side...nothing. (drivers side still works!) Do you hear the clicking noise? I was also suspecting the Relay.... It also sounds like it could be a grounding issue to me...

First check the wires between the door and body-they break inside that rubber boot.
Also if you get ready to change the motor remember the motor holds the glass up-so when you pull the motor the glass comes down-the coil spring is not strong enough to hold it.

The 1 relay feeds the switches which feeds the motors-so if it was the relay it should do it on both.Run a temporary ground to the motor and try it.If you have 12 volts at the motor it should run IF it has a ground.

I have an issue with the drivers side power window too. It goes down fine and if i leave it an inch from all the way down it will go up with no problem, but if it goes all the way down it won't go up unless I put the switch to up and close the door and then it goes up? I changed the relay and it still works the same, I don't think it's a worn gear since it works if I slam the door closed, someone said the brushes in the motor could be sticking and to remove the door panel and hit the motor with a plastic hammer to loosen the brushes. I haven't tried that yet. PG

I took the back cap off the motor, to reveal the brushes and armature and its the brushes on the motor, there all worn down, as is the armature. Is there any way to replace the motor without removing the regulator?

If the motor moves away from the door inner panel it can jam itself.Earlier years the motor was bolted to the access plate on the inner door panel.Later years they took up the gap with some rubber to keep it from moving.

I just used jumper cables and clipped on to the engine and the window motor. Same thing, I hear the clicking, see the 12v at the motor cables but no movement. I also did the "rubber hammer" trick that someone had mentioned earlier but that did not work.

I suppose that it could be in a bind but taking the motor out when the window is down will be a real task. I was able to pretty easily change the motors with the window up... it takes a little time but I did it without removing the regulator on my '76. There are 3 bolts that hold the motor in place but I really don't see how I can get to them with the window down...

If you have the door apart and its flexing it will sometimes jam.Push up on the glass and operate the switch and see if that will get it up.Then try supporting the motor so it wont jam.

Theres 3 bolts on the back of the motor where the plug is, if you take those off you can access the internals of the motor with out acutlly removing it. Just be carefull not to pull the guts out when you take the back cover off.

The window is up so i dont have to worry about that, im just not sure on how to remove the motor. Every where i read it says not to remove the motor untill you have the regulator assembly off and out the door. Im having trouble with that part, i cant get the top rail to come off so the regulator is stuck in there on the top rail.

I just tried pushing up on the window with no luck. The windows is stuck because of the power window motor so I guess I'll have to take the motor off unless someone has a better idea. njcardave had mentioned that he had the same problem and it was the relay. Not sure if in his case whether it was happening with both windows or only one.

I can usually get them unstuck but it sounds like your going to have to remove it.Did you replace the bushing in the plate that holds the motor on when you put the new motor in?If it doesnt fit snug you should do that.

Hmmmm Very Interesting - That back cover is welded on and the brushes are on the other end of the motor. ???

on the side where the power plug is, theres 3 long bolts i think its a 5/16" bolt if you take those off that piece will come off. Then you can see the armature and if you look in that piece you will see the brushes and brush springs.

I got the three rivets out for the regulator bracket and i can slide it back and forth inside the door panel but I'm unsure on how to remove it from the actual door panel. I believe its stuck on the top track, i think its called the sash rail or somthing like that. But i cant seem to acces that top rail so im not sure how to get those rollers off so i can remove the regulator assembly.
