put the timing light on a friends 70 LS-5 and no timing mark in view... with power everthing on this car it's hard to see the balancer, but there is a 2 inch spot that you can see and that is where i pointed the light... no mark.. checked all the conections and made sure i had #1 plug wire and shot again...no mark... W.T.F... then i held the light on the balancer again for 30 or 40 sec. and the mark came into view at the top and moved clock wise from top to bottom... and out of view... no change in RPM and vacuum advance pluged off..... so i did this two or three times.. same thing... shut the car off and made some phone calls and.... no help... i think the balancer is sliping but was told that the engine would run ruff and knock if that was the case.... that 70 coupe runs real nice!
if you have a stock balancer, it is steel and cannot slip. All stock big block 71 balancers have a line ground into it to show the timing mark. I paint the line and then wipe off the excess to just leave the paint in the groove. You should have a timing tab attached to the timing chain cover? Look in a paragon or corvette central cateloge to see where it is located, chances are that maybe somebody has removed the tab

The outer ring of the balancer (with the timing groove) is bonded to the hub with rubber. Over time this can separate and begin to slip thus throwing the timing mark off. If you're real unlucky it will slide off the back of the hub and tear into the timing cover.
