Default Speedometer needs help....

My speedo isn't working, some of the time it jumps around to random speeds. Does this mean it's most likely a broken cable? It can be a little unnerving to cruise by a patrol car in a bright red corvette when i'm not sure how fast I'm going.

Sometimes it sits at zero, and sometimes it jumps around. Where exactly would I need to lube it if that's the problem?

pull the cable out. lube it up with graphite. stick it back in.

some have reported being able to remove the cable with out pulling the drivers side dash out. i'm not one of them.....

Thanks, I'll try that today and see what happens. My hands are relatively small, so i may not have to get the dash out.

I’m going to have to fix my spedo cable soon. Do you have to detach it from the spedo? On my bronco I can just detach it from the trany and pull the cable out through the tube.

I must've been lucky, getting the cable out was quick and easy. I was not so lucky however in that it didn't fix the problem. It's not broken, and lubrication did nothing. It sat right at zero. I guess I'll stick a drill on the driveline and see what happens.

lubing the cable usually fixes the bouncy needle problem. are you sure your cable is not broken now? does it still bounce or just sit at zero? if it is sitting at zero it may have fianlly broken.

if your cable is not broken, i would try lubeing it again and see if it fixes it.

if it is broken, obviously it needs to be replaced.

if not broken, try your drill idea. if it still bounces you may need to remove the speedometer head and lubricate it with some lite machine oil.

hope this helps,

Mike.

Ok, drill seems to make the speedo work so it can't be the cable. I pulled the plastic gear out by the trans to see if it was stripped and it looks fine. The square slot to hold the cable also looks good. It seems to be something before these, but what? It felt like there was a worm gear inside to spin the plastic gear I pulled out, and I couldn't feel any odd breaks or anything. I'm not sure where to look from here.

If you have cruise control, it could be the transducer. It is located just on the other side of the firewall just sort of below the windshield washer fluid container on my 80. Not sure on yours.

No cruise control on this car. ok, driving around today it was jumping all over the place, like maybe it needed to be lubed. I stopped for a few hours and when I got back in the car it stayed at zero the whole time. I didn't change anything between the two drives.

Don't know what else to try, so I'll give it a shot.

Make sure the cable isn't kinked when it's in it's normally installed position.
