Default Metal floor pans

When were they first installed, can you see them under the carpet for inspection, and how hard are they to replace if they're rusty?
Thanks guys,
Gary

1976 was the first year for the "partial" steel floor pan.
I believe I saw replacement sections available.... somewhere.

I also believe it was a single (not double) cross section, so it would be visible under any carpet and/or matting.

According to the August 1998 edition of Corvette Fever: " Another new item for 1976 was a steel floor". This replaced the fiberglass floors because the engines had to run hotter for emission reasons (also catalytic converter placed under the passenger seat starting in 1975). I had to do some mods to mine to install my roll bar, I would probably leave any needed replacement to a body shop. Part of the floor pan is galvinized and double walled, emitting poisionous fumes when cut or welded. To fix the holes after I installed the bar I pop-rivited metal to the remaining original floor pan. Deen

75 76 and 77 had metal floor pans. markus posted recently with mega pictures of his complete floor replacement it's the nicest job I have seen. I have replaced both sides in my 77 not too difficult. I just cut out all the way back till I got to good strong metal then welded in new panels. On the passenger side I cut to good metal and made layed fiberglass layers with a metal mold underneath after the fiberglass cured I removed the metal mold and after painting and undercoating it's hard to tell it is not the orginal floor. In fact I've had people say When looking from underneath "I thought you had to repair the floor in this car where"

anyone... just out of curiosity-
Is the pan cross-section double or are you referring to a tacked on heat shield?
I'm always eager to learn...

tom454 the whole floor from cage to cage is metal in my 77 The 77 also had a bolt on sheild above the catyalic converter. Maybe Markus will notice this post and repost his pictures. Unbelieable job of picture taking as well. Maybe the archives has them also. Check it out tom if you missed it, it is worth looking at again.
