1 piece rear main seal vs two piece
What are the differences? Are the crankshafts the same? do they use the same flywheel?
I have a 90 GMC 4X4 that burns a lot of oil( rings are gone) I need to rebuild an egine for it and can probably get a 2 piece rear main seal engine for cheaper than a 1 piece. Would it bolt right up?
I can also get a 2 piece seal bare block, freshly machined but nothing else( I can get this fairly cheap)
Any ideas, suggestions?

Re: 1 piece rear main seal vs two piece (MikeC)
i think the fly wheel is different but dont quote me on it... i think you would be better off just to buy a 1 piece seal because thats what it came with... then again i haven had to look for 1 piece so i dont know about the price
If i were you i would buy one of those 149.99 (parts) rebuild kits from PAW (performance automotive warehouse... i'm to cheep to buy the 5.00 cataloug, why would you summits free  )
hope you find a cheap way to rebuild it

I don't think its going to be cheap.
$1495 for a rebuilt eng
subtract $250 if I do all the disassembly, assembly and supply cam, lifters and timing chain.
I think I'll live with the engines liter of oil per 100 km habit.
A friend just called $700 for a 350 that was in a fire???!?!?!?!?? what the hell is this world coming to!

1 piece seals leak less oil than 2 piece seals.
Crankshafts are completely different. Cranks for 1 piece seals are externally balanced. There is a different harmonic balancer and flywheel for 86 up SBC. Flywheel also has a different bolt pattern to prevent interchange.

different flywheel or flex plate - different balancer - most are externally balanced (if not all) as oppposed to internally such as the older small block (350cid) cranks.
they do seal better - but on the other hand - im no mechanic and have never had a rear seal leak on any engine rebuild i have ever done YMMV so im not convinced - a better deal is the one piece oil pan gasket

Re: 1 piece rear main seal vs two piece (theandies)
Why not just rebuild the existing engine yourself? Pull everything down one weekend (probably not necessary to R&R the engine block itself) i.e. intake, heads, oil pan, rod/piston assemblies, crank if necessary etc.. Drop the heads Monday a.m. at the machine shop, get all your stuff together and reassemble next weekend. I wouldn't worry about washing the block or changing cam bearings or any of that stuff unless your oil pressure is too low to live with. One litre/100 km is pretty bad! (About 15 or 16 quarts per 1000 miles !)

Re: 1 piece rear main seal vs two piece (Frank75)
I'd love to rebuild the existing engine. But the rings are shot, so I am assuming it needs to be bored over and new pistons.
As for doing it over two weekends, this is my daily driver and the vette just went away for the winter.
One more question--- the flexplate to torque converter mounting, are they the same? if so, I'll just get an old engine with flex plate/ balancer and and go from there.
Thanks guys.
P.S. Anybody got suggestions on a good cam for a 4X4---- and it does go off roading quite a bit.

SteveG75........if you're still here, can you tell me if its any cooler inside your car since you installed a BeCool radiator? Sent you an e-mail through this forum, but don't know if you got it. Regards, PM, '74 350 Turbocharged, class of '71
